Bradley Bartz & Giovanni Vines Talk Screenplay On Life of Virginia’s First Legally Recognized Slave

Screenwriters Bradley Bartz and Giovanni Vines recently sat down to discuss writing a script based around the life of Virginia’s first legally recognized slave.

Giovanni discussed having written a number of screenplays for twenty years, even winning awards for his craft but not yet having had a major screenplay produced.

Very rarely do you see films set in the 1600s and even less about African characters. Bradley discussed being inspired to write the film because of racist memes he saw on Facebook. While studying his own family history Bradley was searching through the Library of Congress in 1619 he came across the character of Anthony Johnson who was an African who was able to obtain quite a bit of wealth by participating in the headright program in Virginia.
