Cam Newton recently signed a one-year deal with the Patriots. An interesting way to shake things up for the Patriots post-Tom Brady. As a lifelong Patriots fan I’m not too enthusiastic about a 31 year old quarterback who has been plagued by injuries. In the 2020 season I’d be surprised if Newton is able to remain healthy for an entire season at his age, given his run-heavy style. Keep in mind Newton has already had two shoulder surgeries and I would expect the 2020 season to be a one and done for Cam as he winds down his NFL career were his best days such as when he was the 2015 MVP are behind him.
It will be interesting to see how Cam leads the offense for the Patriots this season. However, giving the trajectory of Cam’s career I would expect the Patriots to be near the middle of the AFC East. Their first scheduled game this season is against the Dolphins who have built up their defense for 2020 adding some key missing pieces. This game will be a test of the Patriots fortitude and how beneficial Cam will be on offense.
While no one could probably fill the shoes of Tom Brady, Newton stepping in for the 2020 season is better than having Jarrett Stidham at the helm. However, if Newton can’t stay healthy, Stidham will be the next man up until the Patriots can find a better option in the 2021 draft.
