Overcoming Rejection

Overcoming-Feelings-of-Rejection

One area that I think I have become especially adept over the years as an actor and writer is overcoming rejection. At first it seems that this would be a feeble topic but I would argue the contrary. Rejection is something that we all must go through at some point in our lives and it is by overcoming rejection that we are finally able to reach our goals and achieve our destiny. One of the most difficult things that I have learned about rejection in my life is how to learn from the experience. While some rejection offers no insight, other denials may offer gems and even new opportunities that will put you on the path to success. Rejection is something that we all universally can relate to at some level regardless of our station in life and have experienced it in various areas of our lives whether professionally or socially. One of the first big rejections in my adult life happened when I was fired from my first job after college at Hewitt & Associates, when the supervisor told me “I was a liability to the company”. Very hurtful words that made me reflect on the importance of following my passion and accepting the realization that office work wasn’t for me. I eventually set out for a brief career in the Coast Guard which proved more exciting as I worked on a construction buoy tender and spent a year traveling the Mississippi River.

Historically, it is a number of people that come to mind that faced rejection early on. Jay-Z for instance got rejected by every major record label before starting his own record company, Roc-A-Fella. JK Rowling’s book “Harry Potter” was rejected by twelve publishers. Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star in 1919 because, his editor said, “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” The lesson you can learn from their failures is that you must have persistence and believe in yourself even when others don’t. So whatever your dream is I encourage you to pursue it today, even in the face of rejection!! Check out this video of Jack Ma who got rejected before Founding Alibaba Group and becoming one of the richest men in China.
