If you are a black male you have a 1 in 1,000 chance of being murdered by the police. As a black male your chance of dying in an encounter with the police is 2.5 times higher than a white male. The odds are against you if you are born black in this country and George Floyd probably was already aware of this fact, but definitely discovered this truth when Derek Chauvin abused his authority as a Minneapolis police officer and restrained Floyd’s neck with his knee for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. While many are justifiably outraged the truth of the matter is that Chauvin shouldn’t have been a police officer in the first place, former Democratic Presidential candidate and potential Vice President Amy Klobuchar failed to get charges brought against the police officer involved in George Floyd’s death while serving as a county attorney in 2006. Chauvin had a history of complaints and had used fatal force before.
The systemic racism that exists in this country that put Floyd in this situation is what needs to change. Why was Floyd in a position that he had to be arrested for committing what was a non-violent crime? If you are innocent until proven guilty, why couldn’t he have just been giving a citation to appear in court? Even less progressive of an idea, why is knee-to-neck restraints allowed by the Minneapolis police?
The most disturbing result of Floyd’s death is how it has been turned into a circus. With the Left and Right trying to politicize Floyd’s death and civil rights activists vying for media attention and using his death as a way to promote their agenda. Make no mistake about it, Democrats and Republicans have failed the American people. You can argue that Trump is the cause because he has stoked the flames of racism but failed Democratic policies which have excluded blacks from employment and investment opportunities share even more blame.
