Is Godfather of Harlem a Brazen Attempt at Cultural Appropriation

Godfather-of-Harlem-_Forest-Whitaker

Chris Brancato the Creator of ‘Narcos” and writer of the film ‘Hoodlum’ spoke at on a panel at the Harvard Business School yesterday and stated he has a new show coming out called the ‘Godfather of Harlem’ starring Forest Whitaker as the notorious criminal Bumpy Johnson. However, the family of Bumpy Johnson claims that Brancato has stolen the idea from a book written by Karen Quiones Miller and is copyright infringing and basically stealing content from their family. The show according to Brancato will deal with Bumpy Johnson’s unlikely alliance with Malcom X. Do you think this is an example of cultural appropriation?
