A true beating in the Big South made it a tough night here at Scorching Hot Action, but a few Horizon & Patriot League wins salvaged the night as we went 5-4 bringing us to 11-8 in conference tourney play. Not bad. These smaller conference tourneys make for some hard picks but reGAAAAWWWDless we love the action. That being said, I’m not going to break down every 1st round game of every conference tournament but I will ride the excitement for one more night as the Northeast & Ohio Valley Conferences tip off tourney play tonight. Before I get into those conference tourney openers we have some special picks to get to from one of our favorites.
Our man Jack, or Mr. Hog Wild as he prefers to be called, texted me earlier today with a list of picks he wanted to get out to the readers today so this Ash Wednesday is a Jack day! And much like Jack in real life the picks are all over the place and there’s a shocking surprise in the mix. BRACE YOURSELVES!!!
In an A-10 match-up Jack himself has labeled as “insignificant”, UMass hosts Richmond as a 2 point favorite. If it wasn’t for Fordham, UMass would be the worst team in the conference and Richmond is on the outer fringe of being mediocre so I think Jack has perfectly described this game. Outside of alumni of both schools and A10 officials forced to watch, Jack may be the only person with interest here. Well, Jack and now you all of course. So, in the most insignificant game of the night Mr. Hog Wild likes UMass -2.
Now for the shocker. Jack loves being called Mr. Hog Wild because he loves hearing about someone going HOG WILD for anything. Sports, food, women, shopping, doing laundry, whatever. In this arena, Hog Wild means rooting for the Razorbacks and Jack’s always pulling for them which makes this pick so shocking. As the SEC season winds down Arkansas will attempt to finish a subpar season strong and that starts tonight in Nashville against last place Vanderbilt. Vandy has yet to capture an SEC win this season and hasn’t won a game since New Year’s Eve. Wow. Let that sink in. No wins since New Year’s Eve 2018. December 31st, 2018. Amazing. Since the new year started on the Gregorian calendar the Commodores have lost 17 in row. Oddly enough, Vandy started out the season pretty strong going 9-3 with wins over teams like Winthrop, USC, Liberty & ASU then the SEC schedule began and everything went south from there. Vandy tries to notch its 1st SEC W tonight as a 2 point HOME DAWG and Mr. Hog Wild thinks they’ll at least come super close to doing it against his Razorbacks. Vandy +2.
If you can’t tell by now, Jack’s a pretty random guy but we love him all the same, you kind of have to if you’ve been friends with someone since the Carter Administration. Jack’s next pick really takes the cake of randomness. For some unknown and hopefully never known reason Jack has zeroed in on the San Jose St/Wyoming Mountain West match-up. Between these two teams there are 3 conference wins and just 10 wins in total. Wyoming’s riding a 6 game losing streak and San Jose St recently snapped a 17 game losing streak. Clearly the constant flying in high altitudes has begun to take effect on Jack’s mind. Nevertheless, the pick is in and Mr. Hog Wild likes San Jose St +1.
And finally Jack turns to his true love of hockey and brings us an NHL pick. Full disclosure here…Jack’s brother, who we call Ronald, has a pretty high up job in the Predators franchise but in no way does that effect any of our NHL picks. With that out of the way let’s get to his pick. The Flyers host the defending Stanley Cup Champion Capitals at the Wells Fargo Center which is probably still doused in menopausal heat from the recent Michael Buble concert. Philly’s streaky season of winning 8, then losing 8, rinse & repeat, has not put them in an ideal situation for making the playoffs. They’ll need another hot streak sans the fallback in order to grab that 8th seed. They’re trying to do their part as they’ve won 4 out of their last 5 including the dramatic outdoor game vs the Penguins at The Link the night before the Buble concert. Jack’s advising readers to go HOG WILD on the Flyers MONEYLINE +113.
Now for some quick opening round conference tourney picks…
Northeast Conference Quarters
LIU-Brooklyn +4 vs Sacred Heart
Wagner/Fairleigh Dickinson OVER 133.5
St. Francis(PA) -8 vs Bryant and the UNDER 152

SIU-Edwardsville +5 vs Morehead St.
UT-Martin MONEYLINE vs Eastern Illinois. UTM lost to EIU twice during the season, once in OT by 5 and by a deuce at home a few weeks later. Spread is 1.5 so could also lay the points.
Jack’s picks one more time…
