For most of us Mondays completely blow chunks. Even if you don’t work, odds are when you wake up Monday morning at 10 you’re like “Oh shit, Monday. I have nothing to do. Damn, this blows”. Well this Monday is unlike most others. This Monday, TONIGHT, Conference Tournaments kick off with the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun SON!!! A true gift from the Gods.
But before we get all up in the A-SUN, there’s SCORCHING HOT Top 25 action going down and we’re ALL OVER IT!!!
Chardonnay got my day started with an A.M. text asking who I like up in the Carrier Dome tonight when his alma mater, Syracuse, hosts #2 Virginia in SIZZLING Monday night ACC action. I wish I had a better outlook for Chardonnay’s Orangemen, but the ‘Cuse is limping down the stretch here having gone 3-4 over the last 7 and you can’t get too excited for whooping Wake Forest. It’s not ’96. Put down the flip phone. Not only has Syracuse not been able to hold it together lately, albeit against tough competition, tonight’s opponent is not what they’re looking for to ride a good wave into conference tourney play. The ‘Cuse is just 1-4 against Top 25 teams in 2019 and just 1-5 versus the better teams in the ACC and the 2nd ranked Cavaliers check both those boxes. To make for an even grimmer outlook of tonight’s game, Syracuse has lost to those top ACC teams by an average of 14.5 ppg. OUCH.
Virginia has certainly earned it’s #2 ranking by playing vintage Cavalier D. They’re just flat out choking teams out like a dominatrix with a new john. Only Duke (twice) has scored over 65 points against Virginia since the Wednesday after Thanksgiving. In that same stretch they’ve only given up over 60 points 5 times, again twice to Duke. As Darth Vader would say to Luke, “Impressive. MOST Impressive”.
This could be a real tough night in Upstate New York for the home team. I love Virginia -5.5. And don’t forget about that new john, he’s gonna get chocked out so keep an eye on that 122.5 Under.
The other two Top 25 games tonight belong to the Big 12. Texas takes on #11 Texas Tech in Lubbock and TCU tries to hold off #18 K-State at home in Fort Worth.
Texas is a scrappy team that is fighting for its at-large life. Their in-conference record is mediocre, but in the Big 12 mediocre isn’t exactly as kiss of death. Texas plays teams hard. In 9 losses since conference play started their average deficit is only 4.4 points, take out the 10 point loss to the SEC’s Georgia and that average loss deficit drops to 3.75. The Aggies, on the other hand, are on a 7 game win streak beating those opponents by an average of 20 points. Tech’s last loss came Super Bowl weekend to then #11 Kansas in Lawrence. Much like Virginia, Tech’s D has been coming out like Cult Jam & Full Force. WHERE’S LISA LISA? The Aggies have only give up 70 points once all season and over 65 twice, both of those happening over their last two games. Both wins, one in OT. Point being, they’re playing the lights out in Lubbock. Tech’s rolling but I like Texas to play with pride and cover the +8
Just 45 minutes to an hour from where I’m writing this TCU tries to put a halt on its own sinking ship. After an 11-1 start and a conference play opening win against Baylor, the Big 12 shit really hit the fan for the Horned Frogs as they’ve gone 6-10 in-conference and losing 5 of their last 6. They were swept by the state of Oklahoma (OU & OKSt) then gave up over 100 points in regulation to a horrible West Virginia team. That’s not gonna cut it with the selection committee if they can’t show some pride this week and in the Big 12 Tourney. On the other side, K-State can win a share of the regular season Big 12 title if they win out this week and Texas Tech also sweeps the week. Senior Dean Wade looks to be back from a nagging foot injury and K-State also boasts a solid D keeping teams under 60 on the season. For some reason this game is only a 1 point spread favoring K-State. The fix may be in, but I’m still rolling K-State -1( or do the Moneyline). I also love the 1st half UNDER 62!!!
Now for the A-SUN SON!!!
Conference Tournament play starts tonight as the Atlantic Sun Conference kicks off this year’s March Madness. The A-Sun is a small conference with schools you’ve only heard in passing around this time of year maybe once or twice. Its kind of like hearing about a friend’s neighbor’s cousins who come to visit every summer for a week, “Oh yeah, those guys. I kind of remember them. Younger brother was cool. Older one kind of a douche”. Now make no mistake, as far as I know there is nothing douchey about the A-Sun, they’re just a little unknown to the mainstream but we love the teams and the action they’ll bring!
In the end Grill wants the top two teams Liberty & Lipscomb to meet in the finals Saturday night, but before doing so they’ll have to get through tonight’s quarters first.
Liberty’s is a 13.5 point favorite vs the mighty Jacksonville Dolphins. Jacksonville didn’t exactly finish the regular season strong losing 5 out of 6 and could be the dead fish Liberty fans want. That being said the Dolphins aren’t horrible on the road against the spread and 13.5 is nice size number. Liberty’s playing for a title, I say rock the -13.5.
The other top A-Sun team, Lipscomb, faces the 6-25 sacrificial lamb Kennesaw State Owls as a 25 point favorite. Lipscomb doesn’t exactly torch teams and as bad as the Owls record is they seem to have some pride and don’t get completely annihilated every game. 25’s a big number that I’m not super crazy about. Have fun and go Owls to cover the 25 and for the game to inch past the 147.5 Over.
The two other A-Sun games feature a team in Chardonnay’s backyard, NJIT, against past tourney fan favorite FGCU and North Alabama vs North Florida.
The spread has jumped from 3 to 4 in the past 24 hours and Chardonnay likes it for Florida Gulf Coast, -4 Eagles.
I know little to nothing about the two Northern teams. North Florida just won 6 after losing 6 and North Alabama is well, North Alabama. The Lions have lost 7 of their last 9 so on this one I say go with the hot hand. North Florida MONEYLINE.
OK, so to recap…
Virginia -5.5 (keep an eye on the Under)
Texas +8 and the Over 130
K-State -1/Moneyline -125 and 1st Half UNDER 62
North Florida MONEYLINE
Owls +25 and the Over 147.5
Good luck and enjoy all the SCORCHING HOT ACTION!!!
