Bryce Harper Not A Free Agency All Star

Phillies try to finally win a division and paid for a huge leg up. Their deal with Bryce Harper not only gave them a major force but took a cornerstone from a division rival. The deal also could be a win for them as they spent less than most top level free agents last few years.

Don’t let the headlines out there fool you. Bryce Harper did just sign the richest free agent deal in history, but he did not win free agency. He didn’t sign the best deal, not even close, in the 2018-2019 free agency period.

Manny Machado signed a 10 year 300 million dollar deal. Yes overall it’s 30 million less, but over 3 years it’s earned, and the AAV for Machado is 30 million, while Harper’s is 25.4 million. Add in the fact that Machado has an opt out after 4 years which you can only assume he will take if economics in the sport grow more. Therefore he can find a deal for even higher Annual Value, and if not he will be a free agent in 2028, where as Harper won’t be till 2031. So Machado will have opportunity to make more money.

If you want to look who won biggest yearly salary then Harper doesn’t win, neither does Machado. The big winner with that didnt even change teams, and signed with….the Rockies? That’s right the big yearly spenders this year was the Padres with Machado and Nolan Arenado. Arenado stayed put to the tune of 8 years and 260 million. So each year he is gonna be bringing in an astounding 32.5 million dollars. That means for the next 8 years Nolan makes 7.1 million a year more than the face of the game Bryce Harper. It seems like maybe Bryce and his agent overplayed the game and got the short end of stick. I’m sure he never thought his contract would be a notch below Machado and Arenado. This makes you wonder what Mookie and Trout plan to do when they become free agents in upcoming years. 400 million? Possible and scary as a fan.
