Quest to be a Boston Red Sox Beat Writer – Day 6

Red Sox 4 – Yankees 5

I keep telling myself that spring training games don’t mean a thing, but when I see prospective starting and relief pitching being lit up in the first inning day after day, i cant help but to worry a little. Red Sox pitcher Kyle Kendrick went 3 innings yesterday giving up 2 runs in the first inng combining for 3 hits. He did get 3 strike outs but that wouldn’t be enough to help shrink his 15.30 ERA. On the other side of the diamond, Yankees pitcher Luis Cessa went only 2 innings and gave up 2 runs as well.

The Sox offense was a little better today. The Sox got 8 hits and only left 6 on base today. First basemen Sam Travis got a home run in the 6th as well. It was pretty magical at one point seeing Sandoval actually turning second and heading to third. Is the panda bear back in full shape and ready to destroy this season? I sure freaking hope so. If the Sox want to make an impact this season they need the former World Series MVP at third to work his magic.

One thing is for sure, the Yankees of new are not the 1990’s classic team but when a Yankees team is young, that means there is possible a future to dominate for many years as they did with that very young 1996 team. The Yankees right now are the 10th youngest team in the majors (see chart below) while the Red Sox a little less than a year older at 15 in the MLB. Youth wins because players are cheap, last a hell of a longer time and are nice pieces of trade bate for the vet you may need in July to bring you over the edge.
