Quest to be a Boston Red Sox Beat Writer – Day 5

Jet Blue Park, Fort Myers, Florida – 2/27/17

Red Sox 2 – Cardinals 7

All I can say so far this year is ouch on the pitching. Brian Johnson went 2.2 innings letting up 4 hits, 3 earned runs and bringing is ERA to over 100 yesterday in his first outing of the spring. The cardinals were able to bring 7 runs in on 10 hits. The middle relief for the Sox was decent until they got to Chandler Shepherd, who let up 4 additions earned runs in 8th and 9th innings.

The Red Sox offenses is starting to show life though. Their problem is they can’t hit when men are on base. Yesterday they left 8 on while making 10 hits. They gave Mike Wacha some hell in the first couple of innings and then lost sight of the big picture. The Sox are now 1-3 in spring training play only above Toronto who is 0-4 (must be to warm for those Canadians)

The Red Sox play again Tuesday 2/28/17 at 1:05 PM EST against the New York Yankees at Jet Blue Park. Red Sox pitcher Kyle Kendrick will take on Yankees  pitcher Luis Cessa. This is the first time the Yanks will play the Sox in spring training. They are currently on a split squad roaster today.
