Movie Review: Rock the Kasbah

Mehhhh. I mean, it wasn’t good but it wasn’t as bad as all that. Okay maybe don’t bother. -Steven Richard K

It can’t be that bad right? The Rotten Tomatoes score is low. Like, single digits. That’s all I knew about this movie walking in. That and it’s got Bill Murray. Also it’s the only movie I could catch between when I got out work today and when I had to be in a meeting.

There’s 1 other person in this theater (at 3:50 on a Monday). More people came in to check to see the fire exits were clear than were watching this movie.

I’m sitting through these previews I’ve seen a few times already reading about the movie. Oh shit Barry Levinson directed this. Diner, The Natural. There’s a few dogs in there, what the hell is Envy with 7% of critics who liked it.

Ok. Buckle up.

Mehhh. It wasn’t horrible I just didn’t enjoy it. I mean it was bad but I would imagine more people would have enjoyed this than the score indicates. It just wasn’t for me. This will play nonstop on cable one day and you’ll probably watch it. The story was sort of all over the place and it felt like this had quite a few rewrites on it. Also, I didn’t laugh.

So Bill Murray, is a crappy talent manager. Okay lets spend some time on that. Okay now we’re in Afghanistan, let’s explore that for a bit. Okay, he’s stranded, let’s explore that for a bit. Okay, now he’s in a village and hears a female singer and blah blah blah you get it.

Note that this movie did horrendous in the box office. According to Box Office Mojo this was the 5th worst opening ever for a film playing in more than 2,000 theaters. Yikes.

TLDR: 1.5/5. I didn’t really like this movie but I didn’t think it was all that bad. It was sort of all over the place but you’ll probably end up watching this movie when it runs nonstop on cable and not be too dissatisfied. If you dig Bill Murray maybe check it out when it goes up on instant.
